Lichtjes op Oorlogsgraven
On Christmas Eve, Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at 4:30 PM, 665 candles will be placed at the graves of the soldiers in the British War Cemetery located at Geldropseweg 68 in Mierlo.
The history of Geldrop-Mierlo and the surrounding villages is strongly linked to the events of World War II. Throughout the Netherlands, this initiative has been taken to commemorate these young men who brought us freedom, to let them feel the warmth of light, and to show our remembrance and gratitude. The British War Cemetery is the final resting place for 665 soldiers who were reburied there after the end of World War II. These young men gave their lives over 80 years ago so that we can now celebrate Christmas in peace with family and friends. This deserves respect and appreciation.
We warmly invite schoolchildren (with their parents or grandparents), veterans, and other interested parties to place a lit candle at a gravestone and take a moment to remember the fallen soldier and reflect on the freedom we now enjoy. The candles have been centrally purchased and will be available at the British War Cemetery. Donations for the candles are very welcome and greatly appreciated.
You are warmly welcome at Mierlo War Cemetery on Tuesday, December 24 at 4:30 PM. We kindly request that you come by public transport or bicycle as much as possible due to limited parking space.
Should you still need to come by car, we kindly ask you to park at the Wolfsven parking lot to avoid inconvenience caused by improperly parked vehicles.
